How To Keep Your Garden Looking Great Through Autumn & Winter

It is easy to think of the garden as a summer project, something to enjoy during the warmer months and largely ignore once the temperatures drop. In reality, the work you put into your garden during autumn and winter has a direct impact on how it looks and performs the following spring.

With the right approach, your outdoor space can remain attractive and well-maintained throughout the colder months rather than becoming a neglected space you avoid until March.

Autumn: Preparing Your Garden For The Colder Months

Clear Leaves & Debris Regularly

Fallen leaves are one of the most persistent challenges of the autumn garden. Left to accumulate on lawns, patios and decking, they create damp, slippery conditions and can smother grass and plants beneath them.

Clearing leaves regularly throughout October and November, rather than waiting until the worst of the fall is over, keeps the garden looking tidy and prevents the conditions that encourage moss and algae growth on hard surfaces.

Leaves that are collected can be composted or used as mulch around the base of plants and trees, where they will break down over winter and improve soil structure ahead of the growing season.

Cut Back Perennials & Tidy Borders

Autumn is the right time to cut back spent perennials and tidy up planting borders. Removing dead growth reduces the risk of disease overwintering in the garden and gives borders a clean, structured appearance through the colder months.

Some plants are best left with their seed heads intact through winter, as these provide food for birds and add structure and interest to the garden when everything else has died back.

Look After Your Lawn

Grass growth slows significantly as temperatures drop, but the lawn still benefits from attention during autumn. Scarifying to remove thatch, aerating compacted areas and applying an autumn lawn feed will all help the grass recover from the summer and go into winter in the best possible condition. Avoid walking on the lawn during periods of frost, as frozen grass blades are easily damaged underfoot.

Protect Vulnerable Plants

Plants that are not fully hardy will need some protection before the first frosts arrive. Moving container plants into a sheltered spot or unheated greenhouse, wrapping vulnerable specimens in horticultural fleece and applying a thick layer of mulch around the roots of borderline hardy plants in the ground will all help to get them through the winter.

Winter: Keeping The Garden Looking Its Best

Maintain Hard Landscaping

Patios, paths and decking can become slippery during wet and frosty weather. Keeping these surfaces clean and free from algae and moss growth throughout winter makes them both safer and better looking.

A pressure wash before the worst of the winter weather arrives, followed by the application of a suitable patio or decking treatment, goes a long way towards keeping hard surfaces in good condition.

Block paving and gravel driveways may also need attention after periods of heavy rain or frost, with any displaced material raked back into place and jointing sand topped up where necessary.

Check Fencing / Boundaries

Winter storms can expose weaknesses in fencing, gates and boundary structures that were not obvious during calmer weather.

Checking fencing for loose posts, damaged panels or sections that are beginning to lean after wet weather, and making repairs before conditions worsen, prevents more serious damage from occurring. A well-maintained boundary also keeps the garden looking cared for even when planting has died back.

Plan Ahead For Spring

Winter is the ideal time to think about what you want to do with your garden in the coming year. Whether you are considering a new patio, a decking area, updated fencing or a full garden redesign, planning and booking early means you will be at the front of the queue when the weather improves and the busy season begins.
