When our customer contacted our Landscape Gardeners in Nottingham, they wanted to replace an overgrown hedge with a clean, modern boundary solution. The existing hedge had become unmanageable and was taking up valuable garden space, so they opted for a durable feather edge fence that would provide lasting privacy and security.
Located in Toton, this residential property required a practical approach to transform the garden boundary. We arranged a convenient date to carry out the work, making sure the project would be completed efficiently without disrupting the household.
The first stage involved removing the established hedge that had been growing along the boundary for many years. This required careful extraction to avoid damaging the surrounding garden areas. We dug out the root structure completely, making sure no remnants were left behind that could potentially regrow or interfere with the new fencing installation.
Once removed, we cleared away all the debris and prepared the ground for the new fence line. The area was levelled and measured accurately to guarantee the posts would be positioned correctly along the entire run.
We chose concrete posts for this installation due to their superior longevity compared to traditional timber posts. Concrete posts won't rot, warp or deteriorate over time, meaning the fence structure will remain solid for decades to come.
Each post was positioned at precise intervals and set into the ground using a concrete base. This method provides exceptional stability and prevents any movement or leaning, even in adverse weather conditions. The posts were checked for vertical alignment at every stage, resulting in a perfectly straight fence line.
Gravel boards were installed at the base of the fence between each post. These boards serve an important purpose by creating a barrier between the feather edge panels and the ground surface. Without gravel boards, the bottom of the fence panels would sit directly on the soil, absorbing moisture and leading to premature decay.
By elevating the panels, we extended the lifespan of the fence considerably. The gravel boards themselves are also easier and more cost-effective to replace in the future should they eventually need attention, protecting the fence panels above them.
The feather edge panels were then fitted securely to the concrete posts. This type of fencing provides excellent coverage with overlapping boards that create a strong, weather-resistant barrier. The natural timber finish looks attractive and will blend beautifully with the garden environment.
Despite this being a relatively small project, we approached every aspect with the same meticulous care we apply to larger installations. Each panel was fixed firmly to the posts, with all fixings checked and tightened properly. The top of the fence was aligned consistently across the entire length, creating a neat, professional appearance.
We took time to make sure all cuts were clean and precise, particularly where the fence met existing structures or corners. This attention to finishing touches makes a significant difference to the overall quality and appearance of the completed work.
After completing the installation, we cleared the site thoroughly. All waste materials from the hedge removal and fencing work were loaded and removed from the property.
The surrounding garden areas were left clean and undisturbed, with the new fence standing ready to provide years of reliable service.
The transformation was immediate - what was once an untidy, overgrown hedge boundary became a smart, well-defined garden edge that improves both privacy and kerb appeal.
